Concrete Driveway Maintenance Tips That Add Years

Concrete Is Low-Maintenance, Not No-Maintenance

One of concrete's biggest selling points is how little upkeep it needs compared with gravel or asphalt. But a few simple habits will keep your driveway looking good and extend its already-long life. None of this is difficult or expensive.

The Essentials

Seal it periodically. A quality concrete sealer helps repel water, resist stains, and protect against freeze-thaw damage. Resealing every few years is one of the best things you can do.

Clean spills promptly. Oil, gasoline, and chemicals can stain and degrade the surface. Clean them up and use a degreaser when needed.

Keep it clear of standing water. Make sure drainage works and downspouts don't dump onto the slab, since pooling water accelerates wear and freeze-thaw damage.

Avoid de-icing salts. Harsh de-icers, especially in the first winter, can cause surface scaling. Use sand for traction instead where possible.

Protect the Surface

Avoid dragging sharp metal blades, like snow plows or heavy equipment, directly across the surface. Be mindful of very heavy vehicles on a driveway built for cars — concentrated loads can crack a slab that wasn't designed for them. If you regularly park heavy trucks, mention it before installation so the slab is built for it.

Address Small Problems Early

Seal small cracks before water gets in and freezes, which widens them. Touch up the sealer in high-traffic areas. Catching minor issues early prevents them from becoming expensive ones.
